Extortion, assaults and vandalism feature in Moray policing report for December

Extortion, several assaults and vandalism were just some of the crimes across Lossiemouth, Fochabers and Speyside dealt with by police in December.

The crimes were outlined in a Moray West Community Council report.

It aims to highlight emerging issues in the area and breaks crimes down into local policing priorities including antisocial behaviour, violence and disorder, acquisitive crime and road crime.

There were seven reports of assaults across the Lossiemouth and Fochabers area in December.

According to the report, one of these instances was against a police officer and resulted in a person being reported to the procurator fiscal.

One further person has been reported to the procurator fiscal but enquiries remain ongoing for the other five reported assaults.

There were also two assaults in the Speyside area across the month with police confirming “positive lines of enquiry” in relation to the incidents are ongoing.

There were eight reports of vandalism across Lossiemouth, Fochabers and Speyside with three of these incidents detected while the remaining five reports have enquiries ongoing.

Three people were dealt with by police for acting in a threatening and abusive manner with two appearing at court and one issued with a warning.

One report of theft by housebreaking resulted in one person being arrested, cautioned and charged before being reported to the procurator fiscal.

Community policing teams removed Cannabis plants from a local property which resulted in one person being reported to the procurator fiscal.

Meanwhile, the Moray Community Investigation Unit also found three persons in possession of a controlled drug, each of whom have been reported to the procurator fiscal.

Under “acquisitive crime” the report says there were two reports of motor vehicles being stolen including a quad bike from a local farm in Speyside. Enquiries in both instances remain ongoing.

Enquiries remain ongoing in relation to two reports of theft by shoplifting.

Two further reports of theft were also received with police saying one was detected as part of another crime while the other remains undetected with no further lines of enquiry.

Police also received one report of extortion in Speyside in December where a person who engaged in conversations over social media was threatened to have the messages exposed to family and friends if they failed to pay a sum of money.

This remains undetected at present, according to the report, and has been forwarded to the EFRAUD department for further enquiry.

Under “Road Safety and Road Crime” police dealt with the following across Lossiemouth, Fochabers and the wider Speyside area:

Two reports of persons failing to stop for Police. Both will be reported to the procurator fiscal.

One report of a person failing to stop after an accident. Positive lines of enquiry remain ongoing to trace person responsible.

One person reported for failing to display registration plates, as well as other trailer related offences, to the procurator fiscal.

One person issued with 3 penalty points and £100 fine for exceeding the 30mph speed limit.

Two persons reported to the procurator fiscal for driving with no insurance, one person issued with 6 penalty points and a £300 fine.

Two persons reported to the procurator fiscal for driving with no ‘L’ plates and unaccompanied in a vehicle.

One person was offered the Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme (VDRS) as an alternative to prosecution for having defective tyres.

One person issued with an anti-social behaviour vehicle warning for having an excessively loud exhaust.

One person reported to the procurator fiscal for careless driving.

One person has been charged with driving with no insurance and driving with no ‘L’ plates.

They were arrested and released to appear at court at a later date.
