‘Extinct’ Hawfinch spotted at Eastnor, Herefordshire

A hawfinch was caught on camera in Eastnor by a local photographer, Chris Rickards.

Last month, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust said a pair of breeding hawfinches seen by local ornithologist Daniel Webb was the first breeding record of the species in Herefordshire in 140 years.

Just days later, a spokesperson for the trust confirmed that there have been very recent records of breeding pairs in the county, meaning the bird was not so “extinct” after all.

Despite this, the hawfinch remains a very rare bird and is on the Birds of Conservation Concern red list, with the RSPB reporting that there are only around 500 to 1,000 breeding pairs in the UK.

Hawfinches are the UK’s largest finch, with brown plumage and a huge bill. The RSPB says they can be difficult to spot as they are shy and their traditional breeding areas have declined in recent years.
