Across Basildon, Southend, and Broomfield Hospitals, the Trust has remained steadfast in its commitment to innovation.
Here’s a look back at the ground-breaking achievements and investments that have shaped healthcare in south Essex this year.
In March, Southend Hospital’s cardiology team made headlines by successfully performing its first left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) procedure.
This innovative treatment addresses a condition where the heart’s two sides fail to pump in sync due to a blockage.
Safer and more efficient than traditional alternatives, LBBP significantly reduces hospital stays.
In May, Southend Hospital unveiled a state-of-the-art fluoroscopy machine, funded by a £1 million investment.

This equipment delivers clearer, more precise imaging, enhancing diagnostic accuracy for patients.
July saw Basildon Hospital debut its £4 million investment in advanced imaging technology, including cutting-edge CT scanners and two MRI machines.
These innovations have dramatically improved the speed and accuracy of diagnostic scans, benefiting more than 60 patients daily and reducing wait times.

Southend Hospital’s Day Surgery team piloted laparoscopic, or keyhole, hysterectomies in September, revolutionizing post-operative recovery for patients.
This minimally invasive procedure shortens recovery times, allowing patients to return home sooner and reducing the risk of complications.
In a significant step toward decentralizing healthcare, the Trust advanced its Community Diagnostic Centre projects in 2024.

Construction of the Thurrock CDC began in March, and the Braintree CDC entered its building phase in August.
In October, the Trust acquired The Place and the neighbouring library for the Pitsea CDC, with plans to open by late 2026.
Additionally, November saw approval for Southend CDC, set to open under independent management by summer 2025.
In November, Jane Ralph, a nurse at Southend Hospital’s Emergency Department, placed one of the final bricks in the new £8.5 million ED extension.

This state-of-the-art facility will feature dedicated children’s and adult treatment areas, as well as expanded waiting rooms.
Set to open in summer 2025, the extension marks a significant milestone in improving emergency care for the region.
The innovations of 2024 highlight the Mid and South Essex NHS Trust’s commitment to staying at the forefront of medical advancements.
By investing in cutting-edge technology, pioneering new procedures, and expanding access to care, the Trust is transforming healthcare for the communities it serves.
