Antony Maxwell, 21, was in a fifth-floor hotel room in Antalya last April when he went onto the balcony to have a cigarette.
Coroner Michelle Brown told the court on Wednesday how Mr Maxwell, who lived in Maldon and worked as a crane operator, was on a family holiday with his girlfriend and a group of 15 relatives at the time of the incident.
A post-mortem found he had 231mcg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, nearly two times the legal drink drive limit in the UK.
The inquest was attended by Mr Maxwell’s grandparents, Lynn and John Mann, with Mrs Mann telling the coroner Mr Maxwell “had a long day travelling and had been working late the night before”.
She said: “We only had a message from him, as in a photograph of him, at Stansted airport saying, ‘We’re on our way’.
“The next message to us was early hours in the morning – for all we knew he was on holiday enjoying himself.
“And that was it.”
The coroner added that due to the Turkish legal system’s refusal to recognise coroner’s proceedings in the UK, it had been difficult to obtain documents which set out the circumstances of Mr Maxwell’s death.
She said: “They don’t recognise the coronial system at all – we are lucky to get whatever documents we have.
“They had just arrived at the hotel – [his girlfriend] was unpacking and he went onto to the balcony to have a cigarette and he fell from five floors.”
She added there was no third-party involvement in Mr Maxwell’s death, and concluded he died due to fatal injuries sustained due to a fall at the Kahya resort aqua and spa in Antalya Turkey.
The conclusion was one of accident.
