Eight-year-old boy growing hair for a year to make wigs for children

Starting this month, Em-Ray, from Newton Aycliffe, will begin a year-long journey of growing his rare blonde hair to donate to the Little Princess Trust, a charity dedicated to providing wigs for children and young people who have lost their hair due to illness or treatment.

Blonde hair, particularly in Em-Ray’s light shade, is a rarity for wig-making, so this donation will be especially valuable for the trust.

His dad, Scott- Liam Wilson-Edge, originally from Darlington, said: “Em-Ray is doing this because he loves to help others, and is a very kind little lad.

“I have suffered with cancer myself, so it’s something personal and close to us.”

This isn’t the first time Em-Ray has taken on this compassionate challenge. Although an unexpected haircut in July interrupted his efforts last year, he is now fully prepared to tackle the coming year and make his contribution count.

He had his final haircut for a year on December 30 and is now ready to fundraise and grow his hair for such a special charity.

To further support the trust he and his family are raising funds to help cover the costs associated with creating the wigs.

Wig-making is a costly process, and the family’s goal is to ensure the trust can craft high-quality wigs without straining its existing budget.

Additionally, the family has committed to donating the money they would have spent on Em-Ray’s usual monthly haircuts throughout 2025.

The effort has already drawn heartfelt support from those who have benefited from the Little Princess Trust.

One mother, whose daughter received a wig from the trust after she was diagnosed with Trichotillomania at the age of three, said: “What a wonderful, kind little boy!

“Well done to you little man and parents. My daughter received a wig with Princess Trust and her hair was this shade if not lighter, they explained how limited this colour is!!

“I have seen the confidence a wig can give a little girl and its an amazing thing to do.

“Little Princess Trust in Darlington were fantastic with her.

“We will be donating to this lovely cause. ”

Wendy Tarplee-Morris, Founder of The Little Princess Trust, said: “We are so grateful to Em-Ray for choosing to support our charity and help children with hair loss.

“We appreciate his efforts to grow his hair throughout 2025 so that it will be long enough for us to use in our wigs.

“This year is the 20th anniversary of our charity so it’s wonderful to see Em-Ray supporting us so brilliantly in this special year.”

The family is encouraging others to donate and support this meaningful cause, highlighting how every contribution can bring hope and joy to someone in need.

If you’d like to support Em-Ray and the Little Princess Trust, donations can be made via their GoFundMe page.
