Earthian closure is a blow to independent stores in Winchester

The shop has been trading since 2020 but has been hit by rising costs and for owner Katie Campling the impact of becoming mother in November.

She said on Facebook: “It has been a joy, for me, to run (the shop) for these last four years. So much of that is down to this community and the shared passion we have for sustainability, for people and for the planet.

“Unfortunately, financially, things have been incredibly difficult. We have just about been surviving since we opened our doors and I’ve put so much into it to try and keep it going but I just have not been able to make it thrive in the way that it should. This last year in particular, our costs have risen considerably, and our sales have sadly just dwindled. We started to fall behind, and at this point, I think it’s the right decision for us to start to wind things down.

The shop stocked a lot of food and household items and gave the option of allowing people to do refills of personal cleaning and domestic products.

The closure shows just how hard it is for independents to survive in this day and age. It is obviously a blow to people who want to avoid chain stores and support green initiatives. But there are still a large number of independent stores in the city and they are part of this city’s DNA.

Best of luck to Ms Campling for the future and for the hopefully independent business that takes over the premises.
