Early bird offers for Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events in Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds – as broadcaster Adele Roberts shares story

A broadcaster and DJ has shared her story as people in Suffolk are urged to sign up for a major cancer fund-raising event.

Throughout January, Cancer Research UK is offering 50 per cent off signups for its Race for Life events.

In Suffolk, two events are planned – the first at Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds, on June 8 and the second at Trinity Park, Ipswich, on June 15.

Hundreds of thousands of people take part in Race for Life events across the UK each year, raising millions for cancer research.

Broadcaster and DJ Adele Roberts was treated for bowel cancer in 2021 and lives with a stoma.

Just 18 months later, in 2023, she broke a Guinness World Record for running the fastest marathon with a stoma bag.

Now she’s on a mission to conquer all six World Major Marathons including Berlin, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Boston and London to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and the Attitude Mag Foundation, the cancer charity said.

She was inspired to take part in the Race for Life by her sister Lois.

Ms Roberts said: “I Race for Life because of my little sister Lois.

“Within the space of two years, my Auntie Ann had lost our Uncle Phil to cancer and then had to go through it herself – without her husband.

“Lois wanted to do Race for Life in tribute to Auntie Ann and Uncle Phil and to give back to the organisations that’d helped them. And she’s inspired me to do the same.”

Race For Life comprises four events – a 3K, 5K or 10K course as well as the ‘Pretty Muddy’ obstacle course.

Anyone wishing to sign up can get access to the early bird deal with code RACE25NY.

The deal began on December 18 and runs until January 31.

Patrick Keeley, Cancer Research UK’s spokesman for the East of England, said the cause was worth racing for.

He added: “Sadly nearly one in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime, but all of us can help beat it.

“We’re proud that Race for Life has already helped double survival rates in the UK. Every penny raised at Race for Life truly makes a difference and powers progress.

“We’d love for as many people as possible to join us at Race for Life. There is an event for everyone – and we mean everyone.

“January is the perfect time to commit to getting a little more active.

“Whether people are living with cancer, taking part in honour of or in memory of a loved one with cancer, in it for the medals or just for the fun of fundraising, there is a place for everyone.”
