Gritters have taken to the streets in recent days to ensure main roads have been cleared along the council’s ‘priority routes’.
But now the council is asking the public to identify their nearest salt bin.
A council post on social media said: “It’s been a demanding week for our Highways team as they’ve tackled heavy snow and challenging conditions across the county, to keep our priority network moving.
“From battling snow drifts to ensuring vital deliveries of medicine and fuel to cut-off areas, our dedicated team has been working around the clock to clear P1 and P2 routes.
“Our Clean and Green teams have prioritised clearing paths in town centres, next to schools, medical centres, and hospitals to keep our communities safe.
“With freezing temperatures returning this weekend, we’re asking for your help.

“We have over 2,500 salt bins across the county, which are available for residents to use on streets not included in our priority network.
“Please visit https://www.durham.gov.uk/saltbins to locate your nearest salt bin or request a refill.
“Our team, as always, will continue to treat the priority network.”
It comes as the Met Office said that Thursday was the coldest January night in 15 years.
Friday night is predicted to bring the lowest temperatures of the cold snap in parts of Scotland and northern England, with temperatures between minus 15C and minus 20C possible.
