Dunfermline man Barclay McIntosh rewarded in New Years Honours list

Barclay McIntosh was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the New Year Honours list for his services to the community in Fife.

The 72 year-old has been involved in helping an array of organisations across the region – and further afield – over the last few decades.

He was delighted to have his efforts rewarded.

“It was a pleasant surprise when I got the letter about this about seven weeks ago. I am delighted and extremely proud,” he told the Press.

“About two years ago, I was out for a coffee with a friend and he said ‘you are forever doing things. Someone should put your name forward for some sort of award’.”

Barclay, a retired physics teacher and lecturer, helps with fundraising or events for the SSPCA, Cancer Research UK, Guide Dogs, CHAS and is a citizen advocate with Dunfermline Advocacy.

“I did hospital radio. I had always wanted to be involved in radio and then with Radio West Fife I got to do the training and I was also a presenter for ten years,” he added.

“I have a real interest in animals. I am a member of the Swan Lifeline on the River Thames and the SSPCA was an obvious one and the Guide Dogs as well.

“I am quite heavily involved in CHAS and also Cancer Research. I have a reputation for being the man that does the tombola. As a former teacher, no-one gets past me!”
