Dr Gray’s Hospital has welcomed another key team member as work to fully restore the region’s maternity services continues.
Calum McDonald, consultant anaesthetist and training program director for anaesthesia across the north of Scotland, has joined the maternity team in Elgin for part of his working week.
Dr Calum McDonald has joined the Moray maternity team.
Dr McDonald has been a consultant anaesthetist in Aberdeen since 2010, specialising in obstetric anaesthesia.
He has worked in smaller hospitals across the north during this time and is “excited” to be part of the team who will bring consultant-led births back to Moray.
Dr McDonald said: “I’ve gained a lot of insight into the benefits and challenges of delivering healthcare outside the main centres and understand how valued these services are by local communities.
“We will be offering planned caesarean section surgery in Moray in 2025.
“Behind this major milestone is a growing team of people who can now provide hugely enhanced services, including advanced scanning and fetal medicine expertise.
“I’m really excited to be part of the team.”
Jane Gill, programme director with the north of Scotland maternity collaborative, says that the health board remains committed to delivering a markedly improved service in Moray in 2026.
She said: “Fostering and developing relationships between the teams at hospitals in Aberdeen, Elgin and Inverness is essential to support this effort in the future.
“Calum is well-placed and has all the skills and experience to play a key part in this effort. We’re really pleased he’s joining the team.
“We are committed to providing the most advanced and comprehensive maternity care Moray has ever seen. This is another important step towards achieving that vision.”
