Dozens of schools closed and flights cancelled as Met Office issue yellow warning for snow and ice

Dozens of schools have been closed and flights cancelled in the north of Scotland as a fresh yellow warning for snow and ice has been issued.

The Met Office is forecasting more sleet, rain, snow and ice for large parts of the country with a new alert coming into effect at midday on Tuesday until noon on Wednesday.

The warning covers much of Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Highlands with more than 40 schools closed and transport cancelled in the region due to poor road conditions.

Orkney and Shetland, Dumfries and Galloway, Strathclyde, Argyll and Bute, East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire and South Ayrshire are also covered by the warning for snow and ice.

Forecasters warned up to 10cm of snow could fall in some areas, with disruption to transport and on roads expected.

At Aberdeen Airport, all flights were suspended on Tuesday morning as passengers faced a second day of disruption after issues with de-icing planes arose on Monday.

On Tuesday, passengers faced further disruption with services to destinations such as Bergen, Amsterdam and London cancelled.

Customers flying with airlines such as British Airways, KLM and Loganair are among those facing disruption.

Operations at the airport resumed after 10am.

Snow gates at Braemar, Glenshee, Bridge of Dye and Cock Bridge were also closed on Tuesday, said Traffic Scotland.

Gritters were also out in force on trunk roads across the country, according to BEAR Scotland.
