Darlington to feel like -7°C overnight as freeze continues

The Met Office is predicting a cold, windy, and sunny day on Tuesday (January 7) just days after the region was covered in a blanket of snow.

But while Darlington is expected to remain largely dry apart from the odd wintry shower, temperatures are set to fall quickly after dusk.

The forecaster said that while it will stay clear and dry overnight for the North East, this will allow for widespread and locally severe frost, with minimum temperatures set at -6°C.

As things stand, Darlington is set to feel like -6°C from 8pm onwards (actual temperature -1°C) and this will drop to a feeling of -7°C from 5am until 9am (actual temperature -2°C and -3°C).

The sub-zero temperatures following a weekend of widespread snow across the North East, causing travel disruption and even some schools to close on the first day back after Christmas.

The Government also issued an amber health alert for the next six days on Monday, warning of an increase in death and demand on the NHS.

The alert warns of excess deaths, staffing issues and more due to plunging temperatures, with The Met Office predicting temperatures plunging as low as -3C later this week.
