Darlington Market food stand handed 1* hygiene rating

Olive Cypriot Food has been told major improvement is necessary after inspectors visited the Cypriot street food stall on December 13 last year.

The venue has been a popular spot at the market since first opening in October 2022, and serves everything from halloumi pittas and chicken gyros to feta cheese salads.

A spokesperson for Olive Cypriot Food said inspectors visited the site twice in December, asked the firm to make some changes, and said they would return soon.

They said all improvements requested had been made and that they are waiting for a reinspection, which they hope could come as soon as this week.

Food safety officers gave it a rating of one out of five, and ranked three categories during the visit; hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, and the management of food safety.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) had not released the individual ratings for each of these categories at the time of publication.

As previously reported, Olive Cypriot Food launched in the market following the departure of Hungarian vendor Taste of Budapest.

Having previously been teased to “add something completely different” to the market ahead of its opening, the venue continues to be praised online for its food.

One person described it as “one of the best takeaways in Darlo” while another said it was “absolutely delicious” with “quick and easy collection”.

The Northern Echo has contacted Darlington Council for the full food hygiene inspection report.
