Dancing On Ice’s Ferne McCann had childhood skating accident

The 34-year-old said she will be “leaning into nervousness” on the ITV skating show where she is partnered with American professional skater Brendyn Hatfield.

Speaking about the accident, she told the PA news agency: “I actually did have an ice skating party… when I was about seven and my only experience was that an ice skate got stuck in my leg, so some boy was like kicking the ice.

“But it didn’t put me off, because here I am, but apart from that, (I) could get round (the ice), but not much experience to this level.”

How did Ferne McCann become famous?

McCann rose to fame on ITVBe reality show The Only Way Is Essex, joining its ninth series and leaving in its 17th.

She went on to star in her own ITV show Ferne McCann: First Time Mum from 2017 to 2023 before it was rebranded as Ferne McCann: My Family And Me.

In 2015, she appeared in series 15 of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! where she finished in third place behind Union J singer George Shelley and winner Vicky Pattison who is best known for starring in Geordie Shore.

Ferne McCann to “bring only positivity” to her Dancing On Ice experience

Speaking ahead of performing on Dancing On Ice, McCann added: “Don’t get me wrong, I keep having these waves of realisation that we are going to be skating live on TV, and I’m like, oh my goodness, and I start getting scared.

“I’m thinking, what if I fall in there? And I’m like, no, I’m just going to visualise and bring only positivity.

“But it’s just been so magical, and it’s such a big production, so much goes into making this show, and we’ve had a long journey learning how to ice skate and everything. I just really want to enjoy it now.”

Her fellow competitor, Springwatch presenter Michaela Strachan said she is feeling “excited and anxious” ahead of her “scary” Dancing On Ice debut.

The 58-year-old, who will be partnered with Mark Hanretty on the ITV skating show, said she had been training hard for the programme but took a break over Christmas.

Speaking ahead of her first performance on the show, she told PA: “I’m feeling confident, we’ve worked very hard, but what is so scary about this show is all you need is one toe pick and you’re over.

“It doesn’t matter how good you were yesterday, today things could go wrong, but they’re not going to go wrong, because it’s all about the mindset.

“I’m feeling excited and anxious in equal measure, the training has been really intense, we’ve had a break for Christmas, but before that, it was two hours on the ice. Mark and I like to work really hard, so we did one to two hours off ice as well.

“So four hours a day, five days a week of training, so that’s a lot of training when you’re not used to it.”

Strachan is best known for presenting the BBC’s Winterwatch, Autumnwatch and Springwatch but said she isn’t used to live TV when wearing skates.

She added: “When the music started, my legs started to shake, and if your leg starts to shake and then you try and ice skate it’s not a good combo, so you’ve really got to work hard at not getting nervous.

“I do live telly, I’ve got Winterwatch in two weeks’ time, I’m used to live telly, I’m not used to being on skates, that’s a very big difference. But I really hope I can control those nerves.”
