Dad’s Army Museum gifts Thetford Town Football Club with display explaining why Ian Lavender chose to wear scarf with club’s colours

A town football club has been presented with a display explaining why one of the main cast members of Dad’s Army chose to wear a scarf with the club’s colours.

The Dad’s Army Museum has gifted Thetford Town Football Club the display, which includes a section of a scarf similar to that worn by Private Pike, played by actor Ian Lavender.

Ian, the last remaining main cast member in the series Dad’s Army, died last February.

The series, which tells the exploits of the fictional Walmington-on-Sea, was filmed in and around Thetford between 1968 and 1977.

The scarf was picked by Ian and appeared in the series.

The actor was asked to choose clothing from the props department and spotted the claret and blue scarf, the colours of Aston Villa, which reminded him of his home city Birmingham.

They are also the colours of Thetford Town Football Club.

Nigel Armes, Thetford Town chairman, said: “Thetford Town attracts visitors from across the eastern counties and the club is pleased to help raise awareness of Thetford’s Dad’s Army Museum by putting up the display in the clubhouse.

“The club sees itself as at the heart of the Thetford community and we are glad to promote a similar minded organisation.”

Stuart Wright, museum’s chairman, added: “As a museum we work with numerous organisations in the town.

“We mention the football club having the same colours as Pike’s scarf when we drive past the club on our popular coach tours of the locations used.

“The museum is all run by volunteers, so any opportunity we have to publicise the museum is gratefully received.”
