CQC Westley Court Care Home Cookley requires improvement

Westley Court Care Home on Austcliffe Lane in Cookley was praised by inspectors for its support of staff, the safety of residents, record-keeping and being “welcoming” and “homely”, but the CQC found it fell short on environmental risks and leadership.

In the report, published on Friday (January 10), inspectors found that the provider had systems and processes in place, but they were “not assured they were always used effectively in relation to environmental risks”.

The home has made improvements since the last inspection (Image: Coate Water Care Ltd) The report recognised that improvements had been made since the last inspection, but “parts of the environment needed repair and updating” including equipment which needed replacing.

The inspectors said: “We identified an ongoing breach of regulation in relation to governance. At our last inspection, we rated this key question requires improvement. The rating for this key questions has remained requires improvement.

“Actions were not always taken to reduce or remove risks in a timely manner. Areas of the premises needed improvement. Some work had been completed since our last inspection and further work was planned.

“The registered manager had started to introduce a culture of learning to ensure improvements were made, however, this had not yet been fully embedded.”

Despite the concerns, the inspectors acknowledged some improvements had been made including the systems to communicate people’s care needs as well as the manager promoting an “open-door culture for people, their relatives and staff”.

Residents also said they felt “safe” and received “good care” from staff who know them well and supported them to reduce risks to their safety.

One resident said: “Two of the staff take me to the bathroom and I feel safe.”

The manager was also praised by residents and relatives with one person praising the changes implemented including the creation of a “beautiful sitting area”.

“This includes improvements to the care delivery, management oversight and medicines management. The report is from an inspection that took place in August and September 2024, and since then further improvements have continued to be made.

“Residents are cared for by a well-trained, dedicated and caring team, who are supported by an experienced clinical management team. Since the inspection, the home has undergone an extensive refurbishment with modern facilities, offering a ‘home from home’ to those who chose to make Westley Court their home.

“Improvements also include new equipment and improved management auditing tools to ensure compliance within the home.

“We are holding an Open Day on Thursday, February 13 from 10am to 2pm and would welcome anyone who would like to visit to come and see what Westley Court has to offer.”
