CPRE Northumberland calls on MPs to back solar panel bill

The Northumberland branch of CPRE has contacted MPs, including Joe Morris, Hexham MP, asking them to support the ‘New Homes (Solar Generation)’ private members bill.

This bill, introduced by Max Wilkinson, Gloucester MP, would mandate the installation of rooftop solar on all new build homes.

Annie Lloyd, the Northumberland branch co-ordinator, said: “This is potentially such an important moment in terms of the direction of travel when it comes to domestic solar.

“CPRE is running a national Rooftop Solar campaign which seeks to give businesses and individuals energy independence while reducing the need for vast solar farms in the countryside.”

The charity believes that if passed, the legislation would provide significant momentum to their national ‘Rooftop Solar’ campaign.

CPRE Northumberland argues that rooftop solar could address concerns from those opposed to large solar farms in rural areas.

In their letter to MPs, CPRE Northumberland stated: “CPRE does not oppose all solar farms in the countryside—we passionately support efforts to generate clean energy and recognise the existential threat to the countryside posed by the climate crisis.

“However, our research shows over half the solar panels needed to hit near-term national net-zero targets could be fitted on rooftops and in car parks.

“Installing solar panels on existing buildings and car parks would enjoy near-universal public support and help minimise objections to the large solar farms in the countryside that might need to be built.”

Looking further ahead, the charity believes that a focus on rooftop and brownfield solar could eliminate the need for many of the solar farms currently being considered by developers.

They believe the bill is an important step that would set the direction of travel for the UK.

It remains to be seen what stance the Northumberland MPs and the three Tyneside MPs will take on the draft legislation.
