Following a yellow weather warning of heavy rain that was expected to hit the north west on New Years Eve, residents woke on New Years Day to devastation as flooding had struck several parts of Warrington.
Roads have been closed and houses have been evacuated due to the extreme weather.
In a recent update as of 10.55pm last night, Wednesday, Cllr Tom Jennings initially urged residents to call 999 if they are in danger and warned against entering the water.
He added: “The council is available on 01925 44 33 22 for advice and support.”
Providing a shocking summary of the last 48 hours, Mr Jennings stated: “As of 20:30, firefighters have evacuated 61 people from 87 affected properties in the vicinity of Southworth Avenue through the course of the afternoon and evening.
“Most have found alternative accommodation with friends and family, and where required, emergency provision has been provided by the Council and our partners.
“Door knockers have been out from Warrington Borough Council and Torus advising a number of properties in and around Southworth Ave that power will be temporarily cut, as Scottish Power are carrying out emergency investigative works.”
The councillor also highlighted some of the road closures put in place as of last night. These included: Longshaw Street, Hawleys Lane, Lilford Avenue.
Giving thanks to the emergency services for their assistance during the flood response, he added: “I want to put on record my thanks to our emergency responders, public servants (of which there are many behind the scenes), third sector, local businesses and community groups, along with everyone who has helped out —even if just by touching base with their neighbours— in this difficult time.
“I will endeavour to provide further information as and when I receive it through formal channels, and I also understand many residents have questions about and want updates from the Council regarding flood mitigation and flood defences — this continues to be the top priority of your Ward Councillors and we will be taking your voices forward to the relevant authorities.”
