Council thanks its winter workers for keeping Caithness roads open

Highland Council has paid tribute to its winter maintenance crews for helping keep Caithness roads open.

Following the recent Met Office weather warnings for the Highlands of snow, sleet and low temperatures which have caused challenging conditions, the vice convener of the council, Cllr Gowans said: “I would like to thank all the Highland Council roads crews across the area for their continuous efforts to help keep the region moving as much as possible.”

He added: “They have been working in extreme conditions with the resources available to them and have been doing their best to keep priority roads open. From the snowplough drivers across all areas and pavement tractor drivers in our urban areas to the workers spreading grit by hand, I thank you all for all your hard work.

“While we are still warm at home the crews are out before any snow has been cleared, often in difficult conditions and their hard work is greatly appreciated.”

The council has a policy for gritting its roads and gritting priority route maps which can be viewed at: www.highland.gov.uk/gritting

Winter Resilience assistance is offered to communities who wish to act in their own area to help clear snow and ice from footpaths. Information on how to apply for assistance is on the council’s website at: www.highland.gov.uk/info/20005/roads_and_pavements/107/winter_road_maintenance/3
