Council boss responds to flooding in Warrington on New Year’s Day

Chief executive Steven Broomhead has said that the council will now be contacting the government to seek ‘urgent support and commitment’ for flooding investments.

It comes after people were evacuated from their own homes yesterday, with residents being rescued by firefighters on rafts.

Some residents say they have been left homeless as a result, with them having to ‘sofa surf’.

Professor Broomhead said: “We’re very sorry that a number of properties have been flooded across Warrington and the wider area.

“As part of a multi-agency partnership we continue to offer as much support as possible, within our limited resources, and have particularly focused on circumstances where there is a risk to life.

“The council and our partners have visited and provided help to hundreds of properties – but we know that even despite this collective work, some properties have been particularly badly affected.

“We will be contacting government to seek their urgent support and commitment to investment in new flooding relief and drainage schemes.  This is vital as serious weather events are now more common.

“Our work to provide help, advice and support continues.”

Rainfall figures have been shared for a number of areas in Warrington.

They reveal the total rainfall between 3pm on New Year’s Eve and 9pm on New Year’s Day.

In Chapelford, there was 60.7mm, in Callands there was 70.3mm and in Appleton there was 66.5mm.
