Bishop Auckland MP Sam Rushworth voiced his concerns over the conduct of local campaigners and said residents and organisations had been targeted.
The Labour MP, elected in July 2024, condemned the behaviour during a speech in the House of Commons.
Mr Rushworth said: “Parties with members elected to this place should uphold the British values of tolerance and respect, but many constituents have contacted me to express alarm about the way that local officers of the Reform party in County Durham are harassing and smearing local charities and town councillors, and are using their social media platforms to promote hatred, Islamophobia and misogyny.
“No other party in this place would accept such behaviour; they would chuck those people out and ensure that they do not stand as candidates. Could the Leader of the House advise me on what we can do to ensure increased civility in public life?”
In response, Leader of the House Lucy Powell said: “I am incredibly sorry and disappointed to hear of the harassment being perpetrated against elected officials in my hon. Friend’s constituency, and the whole House will have heard his calls.
“I hope the leadership of Reform and other parties that may be carrying out such harassment will hear his question and take action against those thugs, because we need to defend democracy and our elected representatives at all costs.”
A post on Reform UK Bishop Auckland Facebook page says its members “are on a mission to restore honesty and transparency in our local governance”.
It added: “Our goal is to secure local councillor positions, bringing fresh voices to the councils who are committed to change from the ground up.
“We’re here to listen, to be transparent, and to provide the representation Bishop Auckland deserves. Reform UK Bishop Auckland is not just about promises; it’s about action and accountability, creating communities we can all be proud of and restoring faith in the local government.”
Durham county councillor Robert Potts became the party’s first elected representative in the region last year after defecting from the Conservative Party.
Earlier this year, party leader Nigel Farage issued a call for Tory councillors to quit and join his party. The Essex MP wrote to 1,352 Conservative county councillors as “a huge number of them genuinely agree with us and what we stand for”.
The Bishop Auckland branch of the Reform UK was contacted for comment but did not respond.

Rhys Burris, a Reform candidate for Bishop Auckland at the 2024 General Election, continues to campaign for the party locally.
During the campaign he told voters: “Tories and Labour take turns imposing their wokery and stupidity on us.
“The country suffers from high criminality, a failing health service, utter housing unaffordability, overcrowded roads, and schools: a list of failures.
“The governing classes’ betrayal is seen most glaringly in the imposition of mass uncontrolled immigration. Yet they claim that two and a half million newcomers in two years has no effect on house prices and rents. Reform UK is the only party opposing this madness.”
