A community hospital in Wrexham has been “temporarily closed” due to low patient occupancy.

The decision was made by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board over the festive period.

As a result, the three inpatients at the community hospital were transferred to the nearby Chirk Hospital.

Ian Donnelly, Integrated Health Care Director of Operations for the East Area, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, said: “We can confirm that Penley Community Hospital temporarily closed over the Christmas period.

“This decision was made in light of the current low occupancy, with only three patients in the facility.

“After careful consideration, it was agreed that their care needs would be better served at nearby Chirk Hospital, where more comprehensive resources are available.

“Staff members have been temporarily redeployed to support other critical areas during this time.

“We are reviewing the situation and will keep staff and the community informed of any further updates.”
