Cllr Annie Riddle on proposed Salisbury toilet closures

There is no intention to close the toilet for disabled people on the Market Place.

In fact we intend to make it open to all, whilst closing the substandard underground toilets to the  general public.

Market traders and vendors will still be allowed to use underground facilities on market and event days.

We are already considering whether and how we could develop better above-ground facilities on the square, with advice being sought from Wiltshire planning and conservation officers.

Councillor Annie Riddle There has never been an intention to close the council-owned toilets at the coach park or Lush House car park.

We acknowledge that more people will feel obliged to use toilets in shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants or the free ones at the Old George Mall.

We intend to provide signposting in the city centre to all nearby public facilities.

The newer disabled toilet block could be made ‘open to all’ (Image: Newsquest)Measures such as this are bound to be unpopular. But a great deal of thought has gone into this budget and its effect on council finances over the next few years.

If we do not act now, we will not get to the point where we can afford to improve future toilet provision or indeed, balance our budget without substantial cuts to services elsewhere or a further increase in council tax.
