The Peregrine Falcons Explorer Scout Unit launched in the summer of 2023 to encourage teenagers (aged 14 to 17) to “ask the bigger questions, think on their feet, be part of a team and always have a plan B up their sleeves”.
The explorer scouts can decide what activities they take part in and are involved in planning them, helping develop their confidence, leadership and teamwork skills.
After launching, the teens tried archery, tomahawk throwing, biking, laser tag, camping, cooking on open fires, orienteering and learning first aid.
Now, explorer and television presenter Fields, 41, who replaced Bear Grylls as chief scout in September, has praised the group and its volunteers for making an impact on the young people.
He said: “I’m incredibly pleased that the Salisbury Plain Peregrine Falcons Explorer Scouts opened last year.
“This means more young people in the local community are making friends, building their confidence, and gaining skills that will prepare them for life and work.
“When I was young, as quite a shy kid, I remember walking into my local Scout meeting place and getting such a warm welcome.
“I found people who believed in me, and that helped me believe in myself. This set me a path to adventure – taking me to Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands and even the North Pole.
“What made the difference were inspirational volunteers who became role models for me. I’ll also never forget the kindness and friendship of the other Scouts.
“Now, I’m so pleased that young people in Salisbury Plains will get the same chance I did – to discover their talents and find their place in the world.
“A massive thank you to everyone at the Salisbury Plain Peregrine Falcons Explorer Scout Unit. You’re making all the difference to young lives and bringing people together.
“Well done to you all.’’
Grylls stepped down from the Scouts after serving the organisation for 15 years but remains involved as the chief ambassador of World Scouting.
“Always leave the party five minutes early rather than five minutes too late,’ he said.
The Peregrine Falcons explorer scouts meet on Thursday evenings between 7pm to 9pm at the Grey Wolf’s Den on Milston Road in Bulford (SP4 9BY).
