Carers UK to celebrate 60th anniversary in 2025

The charity, Carers UK, has announced its theme for the year as ‘Equality: today and tomorrow’.

Throughout the year campaigns and events will be held to mark the milestone.

The organisation, launched in 1965 by Reverend Mary Webster, began as the first national unpaid carers organisation, raising awareness of the challenges faced by people caring for older relatives.

The charity has since been at the forefront of every significant piece of legislation for carers, advocating for the rights of the 5.8 million unpaid carers in the UK.

Chief executive of Carers UK, Helen Walker, said: “For the past 60 years, Carers UK has fought for a better deal for carers.

“Whilst we have seen visible progress, stark inequalities persist.

“60 per cent of carers report a long-term health condition or disability compared to 50 per cent of non-carers, and the rate of poverty amongst unpaid carers is 50 per cent higher in comparison to those who do not provide unpaid care.”

Ms Walker also highlighted that unpaid carers in the UK provide care worth £184 billion a year, yet still often lack the recognition or support they need.

The charity has said it plans to use its 60th anniversary year continuing campaigning for change, focusing on creating greater equality, support and recognition for carers.

Key events planned for 2025 include Carers Week from Monday 9 to Sunday, June 15, the Carers UK Awards ceremony in the autumn, and the 25th anniversary of Carers Rights Day on Thursday, November 20.
