Can’t beat a bit of Viennese to sweep you off your feet

The programme includes Johann Strauss II’s On the Beautiful Blue Danube, a sweeping waltz which conjures the elegance of the Viennese dancehalls, followed by Berg’s Violin Concerto, an emotion-packed farewell to the daughter of a friend, who died young. From the opening folksong depicting the innocent girl, to the final pages, where an angelic violin soars above a consoling melody in the orchestra, it is an unforgettable piece.

The concert ends with Brahms’ radiant Second Symphony, written while the composer was on holiday in the summer of 1877. It is predominantly warm, lyrical, and tender, building to an explosion of joy in the finale. It was immediately taken to the hearts of Viennese audiences, with its sunny themes and numerous dance-like melodies.

Violinist Alena Baeva

Violinist Alena Baeva, considered one of the most exciting and versatile soloists active on the world stage today, joins the orchestra as their new Artist-in-Residence for the 24/25 season.

Tickets for the concert are priced £45, £40, £34, £25, £17. Under 25s and f/t students pay £12 (includes £4 booking fee).
