James Dorsett, a bassist and multi-instrumentalist from Cambridge, releases his debut EP, Seasons, today (Thursday, 9 January).
Best known for his work as the bass player in bands such as Meliorism, Limited Time, and Lame Goat, James’ EP is a concept recording exploring the seasons through a range of genres, from rock to contemporary classical piano.

The project also allowed him to explore and write on a range of instruments.
James says: “With this one, the aim was to capture the feeling of each season using the different instruments I play.
“The real challenge with writing and recording was making sure that each song had its own character and worked as a standalone song – but that the EP as a whole also worked as one long piece of music, which I at least think it does.”
He reveals that he recorded the EP himself at home.
“I have a small home studio set-up and self-produce everything I release,” says James, who was previously featured in the Cambridge Independent, as a member of Limited Time, in 2018.
“Musically, I started off playing piano when I was really young and then picked up bass and a little bit of guitar in my early teens.
“I played bass in a few bands and still have a couple of ongoing projects where bass is my main thing.
“Over the last six or seven years, I’ve gotten more into production and recording as well and like to experiment with different gear and pedals and all of that good stuff.”
