British Garden Centres encourages people to buy houseplants

The horticultural retailer, which has more than 60 locations across the country, says that houseplants help to “boost both your environment and well-being”.

This comes as the Horticultural Trades Association revealed that one in seven houseplant sales occur in December.

According to British Garden Centres, houseplants are proven to enhance well-being, reduce stress, and improve mental health.

The group says that they filter pollutants, increase humidity, and act as natural air purifiers, creating a healthier living environment.

It adds that houseplants aesthetic appeal also promotes a sense of tranquillity and connection to nature.

Centres believe that the benefits of houseplants make them popular among young adults, especially those without outdoor spaces.

Andy Little, plant buyer at British Garden Centres said: “At British Garden Centres, we believe that bringing a houseplant into your home is one of the easiest ways to boost both your environment and well-being.”

The centres highlighted the popularity of bold, sculptural plants like Monstera and Philodendron for their dramatic leaves and air-purifying qualities.

Peace lilies and Calatheas are also favourites for their ability to significantly improve indoor air quality by removing toxins.

The group has recommended some houseplants for people looking to get involved.

Aloe vera, the Chinese money plant, peace lilies, the spider plant, and the snake plant all made the list for their low-maintenance qualities and air-purifying abilities.

Mr Little added: “With so many options to choose from, it’s clear that plants are more than just décor and your local store is on hand to help you throughout National Houseplant Week.

“Whether you’re a seasoned plant enthusiast or a first-time plant parent, there’s a perfect plant waiting to brighten your space and transform your home.”

The centres make up the UK’s largest family-owned garden centre group, with 65 across the country.

The group was launched in 1987 with the opening of Woodthorpe Garden Centre by brothers Charles and Robert Stubbs.

Since 2018, it has expanded rapidly with the acquisition of 50 garden centres.
