Black ice a major issue across Caithness today – several road incidents reported

With black ice a major issue in Caithness, reports have come in of several road traffic accidents across the county.

A lorry was said to have jackknifed on a stretch of the A9 near Thurso and other incidents were reported at Weydale and on the Causewaymire road (A9) close to the Achavanich junction.

Pedestrians have also suffered due to black ice on pavements and the pocket lanes in Wick are particularly badly affected with complaints of no gritting. “People have been falling at Woolies Lane. It’s full of black ice and not treated at all,” complained one local man.

Traffic Scotland has confirmed that “all lanes are now running as normal” after a collision closed the A9 in both directions just south of Thurso earlier this morning.

The Met Office warns of further wintry showers that may lead to some travel disruption across the county today and tomorrow (January 7).

It states: “Snow showers will continue for the rest of Monday and into Tuesday morning bringing further accumulations of 2 to 5cm in places, and 5 to 10cm above 200 metres across northern Scotland.

“Showers will initially fall as rain or sleet at lower levels this evening, and across the Northern Isles at times throughout, leading to a risk of icy stretches.”

Local weather watcher Keith Banks forwarded a report this morning stating: “A bitterly cold Arctic air mass covers the Highlands and the far north, and the wintry conditions across the Highlands, together with the far north will continue.

“Here in Wick, temperatures on Thursday evening fell as low as minus 2C (28.4F). Today, the best recorded in the town was just 1.0C (33.8F). Up to 3cm (1.20 inches) of snow blanketed the burgh on Friday morning.

“A week ridge of high pressure moving in from the west on Friday will cut off the supply of Arctic air. However, with only light winds, a moderately severe air frost is likely overnight.”
