Bewdley Rowing Club announce clubhouse expansion plans

As part of the Big Build Project, the long-established club will be making changes to its facilities in a bid to create a hub for the community.

The first phase of development will include the expansion of its gym to incorporate new equipment, including treadmills and more bikes, to provide a broader appeal for non-members.

The aim is to have the first phase complete by the time the club marks its 150th birthday in August 2027.

We want people to know that we are open to the public whether it’s becoming a member of our gym or just to pop in and have a beer.

“We have needed a re-development of the site for a long time and we’re hoping the changes will help attract member of the community to make the most of our facilities and book us as a venue.

“In the summer, it really is the perfect spot especially when the sun is shining on the patio area and you can look out along the river. It is definitely the best side of the river in Bewdley.”

The vision for the site (Image: Bewdley Rowing Club) As well as improving the gym facilities by expanding out towards the front, phase two will see the expansion and re-modelling of the clubhouse bar and events space overlooking the large patio on the banks of the River Severn.

Phase three will complete the programme with a brand-new function suite on the roof of the existing building.

The aim will be for the suite to have its own bar and catering facilities, which will be ideal for larger social events including weddings and other private functions.

Mr Jackson said: “When the clubhouse was built in the 1970s, the roof was designed so we could build above it. We’re hoping to create a more private and inclusive space which will be great for weddings.

“We would also be open to corporate sponsors or chains who might want to run a permanent bar or establishment in the suite.”

The first phase of the redevelopment aims to be completed in time for the club’s 150th anniversary (Image: Bewdley Rowing Club) The club, which hosts a variety of events throughout the year including the Bewdley Regatta and artisan markets, has designed the developments with the community in mind and has already reached out and consulted with those who use its facilities.

The team hope more groups will have the opportunity to use the new space and the re-development will help meet a demand for gym and venue facilities in the area.

Mr Jackson added: “There is a real demand for gym facilities in Bewdley. Most people have to travel to Kidderminster or Stourport, which they don’t mind doing, but it would be great to have something closer to home.

“In terms of our groups, we cater for all ages from youngsters to those in their 80s. Anyone can come down and give us a try even if you’re a complete beginner.”

Bewdley Rowing Club has been part of the community for almost 150 years (Image: NQ/Lauren Chaloner) The surveys for the site have now been completed and a professional fundraiser has been hired to help find grants and organise events to raise the estimated £1.75 million needed to re-develop the club.
