Belfast City Airport slammed for fines issued to drivers picking up passengers outside drop off zone

The airport already charges for drop off at a designated layby or in the short stay carpark.

But there are complaints that they are now fining anyone who stops outside of these zones up to £100, using cameras to identify the owner of the vehicle.

The fine issued to airport users states: “Please note we have either obtained your name and address as the registered keeper of the vehicle from DVLA in accordance with the Road Vehicles Regulations.

“Payment is now required in the sum of £100 within 28 days notice.

“However, if payment is received within 14 days of the issue of date of notice, then a reduced amount of £60 will be accepted as full and final settlement.”

There is a right to appeal included in the fine sent to anyone alleged to have breached the parking policy.

The airport currently charges £4 for dropping off or picking up a passenger, as long as this takes place within 30 minutes.

Parking for between one and two hours costs £14 in the short stay carpark and up to £53 for one day.

Former DUP Special Advisor Tim Cairns is one of those who have been issued a fine as a result of parking at a layby close to the airport.

He accused the airport of “charging you £60 if you drop off on the road outside drop off zone”.

“As far as I know there is no sign about this. So they must have a camera but no warning,” he added.

Mr Cairns said the letter he received informing him of the fine arrived too late to avail of the reduced penalty.

The parking is enforced by a private company hired by the airport,” he said.

He said it was disappointing as a “once great, customer friendly airport has become like the rest, money above passenger experience”.

Belfast’s largest airport, Belfast International at Aldergrove, currently charges £3 for 10 minutes drop off.

For stays between 10 to 20 minutes they charge £5, and for 20 to 60 minutes it’s £10.

Waiting for one hour in the drop off can cost passengers £50.

Alternatively for those wanting to spend extra time with their loved ones before departure can use the Short Stay carpark which costs £11.00 for 1-2 hours and £15 for 2-3 hours.

The long-stay carpark in both airports allows you to stay for 10 minutes for free.

In a statement to the Belfast Telegraph, a spokesperson from the airport said: “At Belfast City Airport, the safety and security of our passengers, staff, and site users is of the utmost importance.

“Unfortunately, vehicles on site are continuously stopping in ‘no stop zones’ despite clear markings and signage.

“This presents a real hazard to other motorists and pedestrians, as well as blocking emergency vehicle access. We have therefore introduced penalty notices to protect the safety of pedestrians, motorists and staff on site. This is managed by an external provider.

“Approximately 60 signs are clearly displayed across the site advising motorists that stopping within a ‘no stop zone’ will incur a penalty notice of up to £100 or £60 if paid within 14 days. This information is also available on our website.

“10 minutes free parking is still available for all motorists within our Long Stay Car Park just a short walk from the terminal.”
