Beamish Museum organisers have advised guests that it will be closed Sunday, January 5, due to strong winds and rain as Storm Darragh passes over the region.
It is unknown if the museum will be open tomorrow (Monday, January 6), but visitors are advised to stay up to date with the latest updates on their social media and website.
Heavy snowfall has left standstill traffic on the A1 through Durham, and the A66 to Cumbria closed from Scotch Corner. There is also widespread disruption in the railways, the lines blocked from Darlington to Bishop Auckland, and delays across the East Coast mainline.
A spokesperson for Beamish Museum said: “We’ve been monitoring the forecast closely and our Christmas Evening tonight (Friday, 6th December) is due to go ahead as planned.
A spokesperson for the museum said: “It’s with a heavy heart that, due to the snowy conditions, we are unable to open the museum today (Sunday, 5th January 2025).

“We’re saddened to have to make this decision but the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers must always come first, and due to the weather conditions it just wouldn’t be possible to open.
“For anyone with a booking for our pantomime performances today, we’ll be sending you an email with further information.
“Thank you everyone for your understanding.”
