IMPROVEMENTS to bus stops in Christchurch to make them more efficient, safer and easier for wheelchair users are starting in January.
BCP Council is replacing the existing stops along the high street and installing two larger stainless steel shelters on either side of the road. They will have glass roofs, full width seating and space for wheelchairs. Raised kerbs will allow easier access.
Electronic displays will provide up-to-the-minute information on bus departures, and CCTV high definition footage will be streamed direct to the council’s control room to ensure passenger safety.

Outside Christrchurch Library, existing raised planters will be removed and replaced with smaller ones to help accessibility to the buses for wheelchair and pushchair users. There will also be additional benches added. The works should be completed in 12 weeks.
Cllr Andy Hadley, cabinet member for climate response, environment and energy at BCP Council, said: “It’s great to be investing in improving the pedestrian experience in Christchurch High Street, and especially the facilities for bus users.
“The team has been successful in getting a government grant for these changes, and worked closely with Morebus to ensure passengers and the wider public benefit in this busy shopping area.”
The new works have been funded from BCP’s successful bid for £8.9m to improve the whole area’s bus services.
