Banking hub launches in Enfield Wash to help residents access cash

The hub acts as a host for a range of banking providers in a single location

A ‘banking hub’ has been launched in Enfield Wash to help residents access cash and other financial services from a range of providers.

The Hertford Road area in the north-east corner of the borough was previously identified as severely lacking in banking services, with Enfield North MP Feryal Clark leading calls for the problem to be addressed.

Cash Access UK, an organisation launched to protect nationwide access to cash, announced a year ago that it intended to make the area the third in London to host one of its banking hubs, which are shared banking spaces available for customers of any bank to use.

The banking hub is located within Ordnance Unity Centre Library in Hertford Road, although this is only on a temporary basis before a permanent home can be found.

This Friday (17th), the library is holding an event to celebrate the launch of the hub and local residents are welcome to come along and find out more about the services available.

The temporary hub will be open five days a week and will remain available until the new permanent banking hub opens. It offers a counter service operated by the Post Office, where customers of all major banks can carry out regular cash transactions, Monday to Friday, from 9am-5pm.

It also offers a community banker service where customers can talk to their own bank about more complicated issues on the day their bank is in the hub, with Halifax available on Mondays, NatWest on Tuesdays, Barclays on Wednesdays, Santander on Thursdays and HSBC (morning) and Lloyds (afternoon) on Fridays.

Enfield Wash and Enfield Highway have seen several bank branches close down in recent years and were identified as areas with poor access to cash by Link, which runs Cash Access UK.

Gareth Oakley, CEO at Cash Access UK: “I’m happy to announce that the new banking hub in Enfield North is now open, giving local residents renewed access to cash and in-person banking services. Customers can visit on any day of the week for their everyday banking transactions and if you have a specific or more complex enquiry for your bank, a community banker will be there to help on the day they’re in the hub.

“We’re grateful that the library has provided us with this temporary space and we are looking forward to sharing positive news about the hub’s permanent location soon.”

Labour MP Feryal Clark said: “I am delighted to see the banking hub we fought for finally open at the Ordnance Unity Centre Library on Hertford Road. I have worked closely with residents and businesses in the area, so I know this will be welcomed.

“I want to thank Cash Access UK and the Post Office for all their hard work on this. Please pop down to the banking hub for all your essential banking needs!”
