The plea comes following the reported increase in the suicide rate in 2024 and the tragic loss of a local businessman.
Kevin Finnie sadly passed away in July, with tributes pouring in from across the community.
The SNP MSP said: “There are two suicides a day in Scotland, and every life lost is an enormous tragedy.
“Suicide has touched so many lives. I personally know of three men who have taken their own lives in 2024.
“It is always a tragic loss of life, but we can all play our part in stopping this. We all notice posts from friends who seem to be behaving out of character.
“I’m guilty of reading these posts, wondering what is going on and scrolling by. We must stop, take a minute, and check in. It takes seconds to offer help.
“When you train to be a mental health first aider, you are taught to ask direct questions to find out a person’s mental state.
“We need to get better at asking those questions. That way we can get people the help they need.
“For now, though, I extend my heartfelt sympathy all families affected by suicide. This time of year is particularly difficult.”
