The only Argos store in the area will close by the end of the week.
A spokesperson confirmed the firm has “no choice” but to close the St Giles Centre shop, after learning that Moray’s only shopping centre is set to close.
The Argos store is set to close.
After the closure was announced on Wednesday, an Upland Developments Limited spokesperson claimed that “severe financial pressures” and Moray Council’s support for out-of-town shopping developments led to the coming closure on January 20.
In November, it was revealed that Moray Council had agreed to pursue £750,000 in unpaid business rates owed by St Giles Shopping Centre Holdings Ltd.
Describing the closure as “sudden news”, the spokesperson said the situation had left the firm “deeply disappointed”.
However, it is not clear whether there are plans for the business to stay in Elgin at a new location.
Last week, trade union Usdaw confirmed it was representing workers within the Elgin Argos store, amid fears that jobs could be lost.
The Argos spokesperson said: “We were deeply disappointed to receive the sudden news last week that the owners of St Giles Shopping Centre intend to close it permanently and are leaving us with no choice but to close our Elgin store at the end of this week.
“We’re doing everything we can to support our colleagues at this very difficult time.”
