Optometrist Jose Henao-Calderon has joined the team at Matheson Optometrists, in West Street.
Jose brings a range of international experience to the role, having begun his career in Bogotá, Colombia, where he earned his professional degree in 2010. It was there that he developed his passion for specialisations such as corneal and ocular surface diseases, medical retina, low vision, and specialist contact lens fittings.
Following this, he travelled to the United States in 2012, where he studied at the University of Alabama, earning his master’s degree in visual sciences. He then returned to Colombia, where he spent the next decade working in private practice.

After one year, he began his pre-registration process to qualify as an optometrist in the UK. In July 2023, Jose, his wife, and their two children settled in Hampshire where he joined Matheson Optometrists.
He is now fully qualified to practice in the UK.
A Matheson Optometrists spokesperson said: “(Jose) combines his international experience with a passion for innovation, ensuring that every patient receives personalised, state-of-the-art care. Matheson Optometrists is thrilled to have Jose as part of the team.
