Almost 1,300 fly-tipping incidents recorded in Wrexham in 12-month period

Almost 1,300 incidents of fly-tipping were recorded in Wrexham County Borough over a 12-month period.

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of waste, which often takes place on the sides of roads, country lanes or within the countryside itself.

It can vary from a single bin bag to thousands of tonnes of waste.

However the rubbish can pollute land, waterways and cost councils thousands of pounds to clear.

Between April 2023 and March 2024, 1,285 incidents of fly-tipping were recorded across the county borough.

Fly-tipping is illegal, with those found doing so at risk of a hefty fine or even imprisonment.

Cllr Terry Evans Lead Member for Environment and Transport said, “Fly-tipping is illegal and residents should ensure that if they have bulky items to dispose of they use a reputable company or the councils bulky waste collection service.

“The clearing up of fly tipped rubbish is costly, time consuming and draws resources away from where they could be put to better use.”

In a bid to reduce the risk of fly-tipping Wrexham Council is urging people to make sure that they dispose of any bulky items using a reputable company or the authority’s own bulky waste collection service.

Bulky waste refers to items that are too large to be taken away with the normal refuse collection.

This can mean items such as furniture, white goods and garden equipment.

Up to eight items can be collected for a minimum charge of £57.50. Any additional item over eight items has an extra charge of £10 per item.

Bulky collections are normally made on your next collection day providing that a notice of two working days are given.

Wrexham Council will collect:

  • Furniture (e.g. tables, chairs, suites, beds, mattresses, cabinets, desks, bookcases, wardrobes)
  • White goods (e.g. fridges, freezers, cookers, tumble dryers, microwaves)
  • Garden equipment (e.g. small lawnmowers, garden implements, garden tables and chairs, barbeques, bikes)
  • Carpet (small amounts of carpet and underlay (off cuts of no more than 1 room size)
  • Electrical and electronic equipment (e.g. computers, televisions)

A council spokesperson added: “Fly-tipping is illegal and residents should ensure that if they have bulky items to dispose of they use a reputable company or the council’s bulky waste collection service.

“If you have large amounts of rubbish to dispose of please ensure that you use a reputable company to do it on your behalf.

” As the householder you have a duty to check that the person you are using has the correct licence to do so.

“The company acting on your behalf can not dispose of the items at our household recycling centres but must dispose of it at a private licensed facility.”
