The crash happened at 5.20am today (January 13) on the A19 southbound, just past the A690 slip road.
A spokesperson for the service confirmed that a double-crewed ambulance, along with a clinical team leader and a vehicle from the Hazardous Area Response Team, were dispatched to the location.
Additionally, the Great North Air Ambulance Service sent a medical car to assist at the scene.
One patient was rushed to Sunderland Royal Hospital for further care. Although no life-threatening injuries were reported, authorities have not disclosed further details on the condition of the individual.
The police confirmed they were also in attendance, with officers managing the scene and directing traffic.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 5.20am today (Monday) we received a report of a two-vehicle collision involving a car and a heavy goods vehicle on the A19 southbound, past the A690 slip road.
“Emergency services attended the scene where no life-threatening injuries were reported. Part of the road was closed but it has since been re-opened.”
