A swing bridge on a busy trunk road will close for two nights next week for “essential maintenance”.

Bear Scotland, which maintains the A82 on behalf of the Scottish Government, has warned that the swing bridge over the Caledonian Canal in Fort Augustus will be closed overnight on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

The closures will run from 7pm on Tuesday until 6am on Wednesday, and between the same hours overnight from Wednesday into Thursday.

During the closures motorists will have to divert along the A87 and A887 between Invergarry and Invermoriston.

The work is part of a wider £360,000 programme of maintenance on the bridge which began on January 6 and is expected to run into February. It is also being held to coincide with Scottish Canals’ work on the canal in order to minimise disruption.

Ian Stewart, Bear Scotland’s north-west representative said: “This project on the A82 Fort Augustus swing bridge will help reduce disruption to locals, and to trunk road and canal traffic, which arises from bridge swings and gate breakdowns.

“We’ve taken steps to limit the overall impact on residents and businesses by carrying out the work at the same time as the Scottish Canals project.

“Our teams will do all they can to complete the project as quickly and safely as they can, and we thank the local community and road users for their patience in advance while we complete these works. We encourage road users to plan ahead before setting out by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date travel information.”
